A Night to Surrender by Tessa Dare

Goodreads Description:

Welcome to Spindle Cove, where the ladies with delicate constitutions come for the sea air, and men in their prime are... nowhere to be found. Or are they?

Spindle Cove is the destination of choice for certain types of well-bred young ladies: the painfully shy, young wives disenchanted with matrimony, and young girls too enchanted with the wrong men; it is a haven for those who live there.

Victor Bramwell, the new Earl of Rycliff, knows he doesn't belong here. So far as he can tell, there's nothing in this place but spinsters... and sheep. But he has no choice, he has orders to gather a militia. It's a simple mission, made complicated by the spirited, exquisite Susanna Finch—a woman who is determined to save her personal utopia from the invasion of Bram's makeshift army.

Susanna has no use for aggravating men; Bram has sworn off interfering women. The scene is set for an epic battle... but who can be named the winner when both have so much to lose?

My Review:

I've seen this book around and finally had a chance to read it.  The concept of a town dedicated to the 'rejects' of society sounded original and interesting.  I liked how Spindle Cove had a mix between socially awkward shy misses to women who are just too smart for the average Victorian era male. So in that aspect this book is very original and I can see may books in the Spindle Cove Series, at least I hope there will be. Susanna is a mid 20's woman who's inventor father brought her to Spindle Cove to recover after she almost died due to the attention of doctors.  She was determined to prevent as many woman as possible from suffering as she has.   She becomes an apothecary an invited women who only need a place to be themselves not bleed and purged to fix their personalities.

Her peaceful village is threatened when Victor Bramwell comes to visit Susanna's father.  He was injured and wants to get his command back and Susanna's father is his last chance.  Victor doesn't get what he expects but is given hope, all he has to do is create a militia and accept the title of Earl of Rycliff.   Victor and Susanna instantly set off sparks though Susanna just wants him to leave and not jeopardize her peaceful village.  Victor is attracted to Susanna but doesn't want to dishonor her father.

Their romance is sweet and Susanna sees his need for intimacy as Victor sees her need for passion.  Their too similar personalities clash at times and the arguments are entertaining to read.  This is a happy ever after and I highly enjoyed the twists near the end.  I can't wait to read the next in the series!
